One Thai Commits Suicide Every Two Hours

High-rise building in PattayaAccording to alarming statistics released yesterday by the Thai health ministry, one Thai commits suicide every two hours on average. The youngest recorded victim has reportedly been only 10 years old and the oldest a 93-year-old.
The public health minister is quoted as saying by The Nation that “about 3,900 people end their life each year” in the kingdom, with suicides being most prevalent in the northern region.
While the national suicide rate reportedly peaked in 2001 with 8.2 suicides per 100,000 people, this figure dropped to 6.08 per 100,000 people in 2014. Thailand, the minister added, was committed to keeping the suicide rate at no more than 6.5 per 100,000 people.
According to the director-general of the Mental Health Department, “the [most] common causes of suicides were family conflicts, chronic health problems, jealousy and heartbreak.”
About 3% of men who took their own lives, and 2% of women, reportedly also harmed others.
