Jomtien is located just a few kilometres south of Pattaya and within 10-minute driving distance from the bustling city centre. Nestled within its own wide bay with a six-kilometre stretch of sandy beach, Jomtien is the perfect choice for tourists who seek a quieter and more relaxed alternative to Pattaya’s traffic and noise but don’t want to miss out on the city’s nightlife and other amenities.
Since the late 1990s, long after Pattaya had emerged as one of the region’s premier beach resorts, Jomtien has become increasingly popular not only with family vacationers and weekend tourists from Bangkok, but also “traditional” Pattaya visitors who like to party just as much as chill out after a night on the town. And here’s why.

Jomtien – A More Relaxed Alternative to Pattaya
Jomtien’s bonus is that it provides all the features of a relaxed beach holiday in a less “touristy” and quieter environment, but within immediate vicinity of South Pattaya and Walking Street, which can easily be reached by “Baht bus”. On average, it’s just a 10-minute taxi ride across Pratamnak hill to get from Jomtien to South Pattaya and vice versa; so you’re never far from where the action is.
Jomtien Beach, with an abundance of hotels, condominiums and inexpensive guesthouses, has therefore become the perfect destination for tourists who don’t fancy a holiday in the middle of Pattaya’s bustling entertainment zones but still don’t want to miss out on the city’s vibrant nightlife and immense shopping facilities, all located just a few kilometres north of Jomtien.
Pratamnak hill – which topographically separates Jomtien from Pattaya bay – has itself become one of Pattaya’s most booming residential areas, to the extent that Jomtien’s northern areas actually merge with the southernmost parts of Pattaya.

Most tourist brochures will describe Jomtien as some kind of Pattaya’s little brother, with a little less of everything that might be “too much” in Pattaya – less red-light districts, less noise, less traffic etc. And in a way, this description is true.
Although Jomtien doesn’t quite resemble either what travellers may expect from a tropical beach, Jomtien provides a much more relaxed environment for swimming, sunbathing, and enjoying a multitude of beach activities, than Pattaya’s crowded and noisy main beach.
And although Jomtien has in recent years become exceedingly popular with Russian family vacationers, Chinese tour groups and Thai tourists from Bangkok, especially over the weekends and public holidays, the atmosphere here is indeed less “touristy” and the nightlife much more relaxed and laid-back.
Then again, somehow this approach doesn’t really do justice to Jomtien.
Granted, it wasn’t until the early 1980s that the first hotels and bungalows sprung up along Jomtien’s peaceful and undeveloped beach, while back in the 1970s only the area could basically only be reached by a boat-trip around Pratamnak hill. But, alas, this era seems like light years ago now.
Especially since the turn of the millennium, as tourist numbers and the number of expatriates living in the area continuously increased, Jomtien has seen a massive construction boom, with dozens of new hotels, condominiums and housing developments built in the past decade. For example, Jomtien has since 2013 been home to Pattaya’s tallest building – the Reflection Oceanfront Tower at the southern end of Jomtien beach. With a height of 234 metres and 57 floors, the high-rise condominium doesn’t just hold the local record but is also among the top 10 of Thailand’s tallest skyscrapers (no. 6 in 2015).
Popular mostly with Europeans, Scandinavians, an ever-growing number of Russian and Chinese tourists, Jomtien in the 21st century has surely developed not just into a tourist destination in its own right but also one of Pattaya’s most favourite residential areas, including a fair share of nightspots and quite a remarkable bar scene of its own.
Jomtien’s major attraction, however, has always been its six-kilometre stretch of sandy beach. Despite excess supply of noise-polluting jet skis and motorboats, a disproportional number of beach vendors, and the fact that the water is often not as clean as desirable, Jomtien is still a perfect destination for a relaxed day on the beach.
Provided you avoid long weekends and national holidays, especially at the beginning of a month, when legions of Bangkokians overcrowd Jomtien’s waterfront, you’ll find a beach much more suitable for relaxed sunbathing and swimming than Pattaya’s crowded main beach.
Beach activities include banana boat and jet ski rides, windsurfing, parasailing, scuba diving or snorkeling – in a nutshell, whatever you can think of. And if you feel like chilling out Thai-style, or you get tired of just hanging out on your sunbed, why not enjoy a relaxing Thai massage on the beach or take a speedboat to Pattaya’s own “coral island” (Koh Larn) where truly crystal-clear waters and white sandy beaches are just waiting for you?
By the way, even if you don’t stay in Jomtien but on the other side of Pratamnak hill in Pattaya – if you’re here for longer than just a couple of months chances are high that at one point you’ll have to visit the local immigration office, for example, to extend your visa.
Since the end of 2005, the Chonburi immigration bureau, which covers the area of Pattaya and beyond, can be found on Jomtien Soi 5, approx. 200 metres off Jomtien Beach Road. It’s here where you can get your visa extensions, do your 90-day report and all the other stuff a long-stay tourist or expat may be required to do every now and then.

Find Your Way Around Jomtien
Jomtien Beach is situated in its own bay, just a few kilometres south of Pattaya. On average, it’s not more than a 10-minute “Baht bus” ride across Pratamnak hill to South Pattaya, Walking Street etc.
To find your way around Jomtien is extremely easy. There are only two main North-South connections: Jomtien Beach Road and the relatively new Jomtien 2nd Road.
Jomtien Beach Road is the main taxi route to Pattaya and has several side-streets, some of which are cul-de-sacs, and two connections with Sukhumvit Road: Soi Wat Boon and Soi Chaiyapruek.
The protracted construction of Jomtien 2nd Road (which links Thappraya Road with the southern parts of Jomtien) has basically been finished now; however, other than being a shortcut for motorists, a handful of condominium developments and the Rompho bar complex, it’s still of little significance only for holidaymakers.
The side-streets at Jomtien are either numbered or have been given names of relevant buildings or hotels. The Thai word for side-street is Soi, so it’s Soi 3, Soi 4, Soi 5 etc., or, for example, Soi Whitehouse and Soi Welcome Jomtien.
Pattaya’s characteristic blue “Baht bus” taxis drive up and down Jomtien Beach Road basically 24/7 (though less frequently in the night) and connect Jomtien with South Pattaya.
When you take a Baht bus from anywhere along Jomtien Beach Road and and travel northwards, it’s only 10-15 minutes until you find yourself across the hill in Pattaya. If you just jump on the back of a Baht bus (i.e. not charter it as a taxi) the trip to South Pattaya shouldn’t cost you more than 10-20 Baht.
As elsewhere in Thailand, motorbike taxis can also be found at virtually every street corner.
Where Jomtien Beach Road branches off the coastline at the police box in Jomtien’s North, it changes its name to Thappraya Road. This is the main taxi route to Pattaya and goes all the way across Pratamnak hill to South Pattaya, where it eventually merges into Pattaya 2nd Road. Just a kilometre up the hill, there’s a junction with Thepprasit Road, which is the main link between Jomtien and Sukhumvit Road. Buses to Suvarnabhumi airport also leave regularly from near this junction.
Jomtien’s own gay beach (called Dongtan Beach) is situated north of the Dongtan police station at the junction of Jomtien Beach Road and Thrappraya Road.

What To Do at Jomtien Beach?
While in the early days of tourism at Jomtien (1980s and 90s), holidays here were focused mainly on beach activities, Jomtien in the 21st century hasn’t only become a tourist destination in its own right but also one of Pattaya’s most popular residential areas with an increasingly developed own infrastructure.
Along Jomtien Beach Road and its numerous side-streets you’ll find an ever-growing number of Thai, seafood and international restaurants, money exchange booths, travel agencies, souvenir shops and convenience stores, massage parlours and real estate agents, as well as a number of pharmacies, dental clinics and opticians.
Although shopping facilities at Jomtien (with most shops being rather small and specialized in “souvenirs” or beach clothing) surely can’t compare to the shopping paradises of Pattaya or Bangkok, Jomtien will still satisfy most of your tourist shopping expectations.
For example, the popular Thepprasit Nightmarket (Thepprasit Road, Sukhumvit Road end) which is held every weekend from Friday to Sunday night, is one of Pattaya’s largest and most interesting markets and well worth a visit. Just around the corner on Sukhumvit Road, a large Tesco Lotus branch and the “Outlet Mall” – which features brand-name clothing at discount prices – are awaiting you.
Then there’s the popular new night market on Jomtien Beach Road, just north of Soi 9, which is open every night. Aside from the usual market stuff like souvenirs and clothes, this place also has many cheap food stalls which are are popular exceedingly with Russian tourists.
Near the junction of Thappraya and Thepprasit Road, you can even find a large expat-oriented supermarket (“Foodmart”) that caters for the culinary everyday needs of long-term tourists and expats. And if all that still isn’t enough to satisfy your daily shopping needs, then Pattaya with its numerous shopping malls and markets is just a 10-minute taxi ride away which shouldn’t cost you more than 20 Baht.
Beach and water activities include banana boat and jet ski riding, windsurfing and parasailing, deep sea fishing and island trips, scuba diving and snorkeling, to name but a few.
Other popular daytime pastimes include, for example, bungee jumping, a game of beach volleyball or soccer, and jogging by the seafront. Or how about a visit to some of the nearby tourist attractions like the popular Pattaya Floating Market, or a day trip to Koh Larn, just off the coast of Pattaya, with its beautiful white-sand beaches and crystal-clear water?
Jomtien Nightlife Areas & Bars
While just a bit over a decade ago, holidays at Jomtien were all about beach and water activities, Jomtien has established quite a remarkable bar scene of its own in recent years, including an ever-increasing number of family-friendly bars and pubs, traditional “girlie” bars and gentlemen’s clubs, and even its own little A-GoGo bar. Roughly estimated, Jomtien has more than 100 bars now, and this number is growing continuously.
If you find South Pattaya and Walking Street too “touristy” but don’t want to miss out on nocturnal action, then Jomtien is probably your perfect choice for a holiday destination.
Jomtien’s most prominent entertainment areas include the bar complex next to the Rompho market on Jomtien Second Road, Soi Whitehouse, Soi 5 and Soi 7, Thappraya Road and the Jomtien Complex (mainly gay bars now). An increasing number of small bars can also be found on Soi 2, 3 and 4. Soi Welcome is currently the southernmost street with a noteworthy nightlife and half a dozen bars.
Jomtien’s only GoGo bar (called “We Are No.1 AGoGo”) is located near the Dongtan police box on Thappraya Road, opposite Country Road III bar which itself is one of Jomtien’s most popular and longest established venues.
Since 2010, the new open-air bar complex next to the Rompho market (Jomtien Second Road, opposite Soi 7) has emerged as Jomtien’s most popular entertainment area. Notable especially for inexpensive beer prices, regular pool competitions (nearly every bar here has a pool table) and hundreds of bar girls, the so-called Rompho bar complex with approx. 50 individual bars has become popular with tourists, long-stayers and expats alike.
In addition, Jomtien also has a couple of so-called “gentlemen’s clubs”, which are popular mainly with male expats sneaking out for an afternoon. Popular venues include Kinnaree Place off Pratamnak Road Soi 4, Passion (in a side-street behind the Hanuman Statue at the junction of Thappraya and Jomtien Second Road), and Rioja, a Spanish castle-style villa in the middle of nowhere between Thepprasit Road and Soi Wat Boon.
Drinking prices, lady drinks, bar fines etc. are roughly the same as in Pattaya. Expect to pay bar fines of around 300 Baht, plus a minimum of 1,000 Baht for the girl (long time).
While the official closing time seems to be around 1 a.m., most bars close sometime between 2 and 3 a.m. in the morning, some even considerably later. And after all bars have closed, you can always find some freelance girls (and usually loads of ladyboys) along the Jomtien Beach Road promenade, mostly in the areas in front of Soi 7 and Soi Whitehouse.
Although most bars in Jomtien are “girlie” bars and target straight revelers, more than a dozen gay bars and clubs, catering to tourists with an “alternative” lifestyle, can be found on Dongtan beach and in the Jomtien Complex area.
