Italian expat killed by falling tree branch on Jomtien beach

An elderly Italian national was killed Sunday afternoon by a sharp tree branch that had suddenly snapped off and fallen onto his head on Jomtien beach.
The fatal accident happened opposite the Jomtien Garden hotel as the foreigner was strolling along the Jomtien beach promenade with his Thai wife.

The victim, a 91-year-old retiree from Italy who was reputed to be “fit and healthy and despite his age, still lived an active lifestyle,” and his 49-year-old wife were reportedly on their way back home when she suddenly turned around to find her husband lying unconscious on the ground and bleeding heavily from his head.
By the time emergency services arrived at the scene the elderly Italian expat named as Mr Giacomo Smedile had already succumbed to head injuries inflicted by the sharp tree branch.
Police assume that the branch had been overlooked by city workers who usually maintain the beachside trees on a regular monthly schedule.

Khaosod English quote the chief of Pattaya Police Station as saying that “city workers routinely trim potentially dangerous tree branches along the roads of Pattaya and Jomtien beaches, but must have failed to notice the one that killed Smedile.”

“The branch was already dead, and it was windy, so it fell down … They [city workers] look out for these branches. They might have not seen this one, or they might have overlooked it.”

Pattaya One News, however, quote locals as saying that the trees had been “neglected [by city workers] for the last 2-3 month previous to the incident.”
