An unidentified young foreign tourist thought be a Russian national was hit and killed by a fellow Russian motorist as he crossed Jomtien Beach Road making a video call on his phone.
The fatal accident happened opposite The Now Hotel on Jomtien Beach Road just before 3 a.m. on Sunday.
The yet unidentified victim carried no ID card or passport on him but is also believed to be a Russian national aged approx. 25-30 years old.
An eye witness told police he had seen the victim walk along Jomtien Beach Road making a video call on his phone. He was then hit by a white Chevrolet Cruze and thrown under the front wheel of a stationary tour bus parked at the roadside.
By the time medics arrived at the crash site the man had already succumbed to his injuries.
The driver of the crash car who police suspect may have been intoxicated made no attempt to flee the scene of the accident and was arrested on the spot. He has been identified as 35-year-old Nikolajs Latvigas from Russia.
A video of the aftermath of the fatal crash posted on the Siamchon News website and reposted below confirms that the Russian even went up to the corpse and cried. He also claims in Thai that he had not seen the pedestrian.
Police reportedly also found an open can of beer and a bottle of spirit in the man’s vehicle. The results of an alcohol breath test have not been reported yet though.
