A 75-year-old American expat shot himself to death Tuesday morning on a lawn behind the Spanish Condo in Central Pattaya where he was living with his Thai wife.
Mr John Diller Swanson from Nebraska reportedly suffered from terminal cancer and wrote in a heart-breaking farewell letter to “whom it may concern” that the pain was getting increasingly worse and he wouldn’t “take all this anymore.”
Mr Swanson’s body was found leaning against a wall on the lawn with a gunshot wound to the left side of his chest. The gun he had used to kill himself was found next to him along with a handkerchief.
Police also found a sealed suicide letter attached to the wall behind him, saying:
I HAVE HAD CANCER NEARLY 3 YRS NOW WITH 4 OPERATIONS, 48 RADIATION TREATMENTS. I NOW HAVE HEART PROBLEMS ALSO. ALL THESE THINGS HAVE TAKEN A TOLL ON ME MENTALLY & PHYSICALLY. MY DOCTORS CAN NOT HELP ME ANYMORE. I’M HAVING A LOT OF TROUBLE EATING, DRINKING, BREATHING AND THE PAIN IS GETTING VERY BAD & THE PILLS ARE HELPING ME LESS & LESS. I DON’T WANT TO TAKE ALL THIS ANYMORE.
Mr Swanson noted that he had no relatives in the US and wanted to be “cremated by his girlfriend in Thailand.” He also explained that he had the gun from a friend who had died several years ago.
His wife of 12 years told investigators that she had noticed the handgun the first time when he left the condo in the morning without saying where he was going. It was only hours later that his lifeless body was found on a lawn behind the condo complex. The 46-year-old woman also confirmed that her American husband had been getting increasingly desperate regarding his terminal illness.
