A Chinese tourist identified as Qi Ding was killed in a jet ski accident off Tawaen beach on Koh Larn island, just a few kilometres off the coast of Pattaya, Monday afternoon.
The 26-year-old Chinese man had reportedly just rented the vessel and had a jet ski attendant riding pillion when a speedboat taking a group of tourists from Koh Larn back to Pattaya crashed into the jet ski just off the coast of the tourist island.
While both men were thrown into the sea by the impact, Mr Ding later succumbed to his injuries in hospital.
The Bangkok Post quote a tour guide as saying that “high waves made it impossible for the speedboat driver to see the oncoming watercraft.”
The driver of the speedboat has only been identified as a Thai man going by the name of Mu. According to Thai daily Khaosod, it appears that Mr Mu fled the scene of the fatal crash and police are in the process of tracking him down. It also remains unclear to what extent Mr Mu will be held responsible for the tourist death.
