Update – Police in Kanchanaburi have now announced the arrest of two unidentified Thai men for raping the 19-year-old British woman, confirming earlier reports based on “rumours” spread among locals in the province.
Police on Friday conceded that the tourist was “indeed lured and raped by a group of teenagers as the media has reported”. Khaosod English quote police as saying that the suspects “took advantage of her while she was intoxicated.”
The two men were identified and tracked down using security camera footage in the area and will be prosecuted “in accordance with the laws”, police say. Their names and age have not been released to the media.
The Kanchanaburi police chief has been quoted by the Bangkok Post as saying the case was “sensitive and could affect tourism.” Meanwhile, the unnamed victim has reportedly already left Thailand and returned to the UK.
Here’s our earlier report:
According to a Thai-language report by Khaosod Online, a 19-year-old British tourist has allegedly been gang-raped and robbed by a group of Thai youths in Kanchanaburi Monday night. While the report has not been officially confirmed by police yet, word of the crime has spread among locals.
The teenage girl reportedly visited the province, famous for its bridge over the River Kwai, with a group of friends and stayed at a well-known resort in Kanchanaburi city.
On Monday night, Khaosod Online reports, the group went for dinner at an unnamed restaurant/bar on Nanachart Road and reportedly all became drunk.
Locals report that at about 1.30 a.m. Tuesday morning, the “intoxicated” British girl walked in front of the bar on her own and was spotted by a group of Thai youths on motorbikes who stopped and chatted her up. It appears that the drunk teenage girl eventually joined the gang as a pillion passenger and drove off with them.
According to an unnamed source, the young British woman was later dropped off by the gang at a market after they had allegedly raped her and robbed her of some valuables in a deserted area of the city.
While the crime has not been officially confirmed by police in the province, the teenager is said to have filed a complaint with police who are now checking CCTV footage in the area.
